The New Zealand Deer Health Products Industry
The New Zealand deer velvet and co-products industry currently involves around 5,500 deer farmers’ from both the North and South Islands of the country. Up to $1million is invested annually into these regions by the New Zealand Deer Industry and its research partners. This funding goes towards extended research and development into the different qualities and advantages that deer supplements offer.
In New Zealand, the processing of velvet antlers and other co-products is regulated by the New Zealand governments Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) as well as the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA). This helps to ensure that all processing and hygiene standards are maintained at an elevated level across the country.
All deer velvet and co products are either collected or removed at government licensed facilities or by accredited veterinarians or specially trained farmers. Immediately after inspection product is tagged or labelled to ensure accurate identification and also origin of the product.
